Regulatory Context

Washington's Growth Management Act requires all cities and counties to regulate wetlands through Critical Areas Ordinances, creating a patchwork of local regulations that layer on top of federal 404 permits and state SMA permits. Washington Ecology publishes its own Wetland Rating System (updated 2014) used for CAO-based buffer determinations - distinct from federal delineation methodology.
